LaSD Preface

LaSD Preface

Page xi: (vii in 3rd edition)

First paragraph. “…self-deception is so pervasive that it touches every aspect of life. ‘Touches’ is perhaps too gentle a word … Self-deception actually determines one’s experience in every aspect of life.”

End of last paragraph. Re: baby stuck under a chair. “While it’s true that she’s doing everything she can think of, the problem is precisely that she can’t see how she’s the problem. Having the problem she has, nothing she can think of will be a solution.

Page xii (viii in 3rd edition)

First paragraph: “Self-deception is like this [continuing from previous paragraph, re: baby]. “Self-deception is like this. It blinds us to the true causes of problems, and once we’re blind, all the ‘solutions’ we can think of will actually make matters worse. … self-deception obscures the truth about ourselves, corrupts our view of others and our circumstances, and inhibits our ability to make wise and helpful decisions. To the extent that we are self-deceived, both our happiness and our leadership are undermined at every turn …”

End of second paragraph. “The discovery of a way out of those self-deceptions is the discovery of hope and the birth of new possibilities and lasting solutions.”

TD> Liberation ahead. Sharpened vision, reduced conflict, desire for teamwork, more. Can this little book do all that? It claims to help readers discover practical and powerful solutions to [formerly] “other people’s problems.”

TD> I sort of regret that this is a story of fictional characters but I’m glad they mention it’s built from stories of real people. Hoping, with a hint of regretting also, that I can identify with the characters.

Things I want to remember from this chapter:

  • We (I!) can’t solve the problems I’m oblivious of. It takes other people.
  • Relationships are the key to everything! I believe that and I’m also very frustrated by it as I have such trouble with relationships!
